Mild behavioral impairment (MBI) describes a syndrome of later-life emergent neuropsychiatric symptoms that may represent an early manifestation of neurodegenerative disease. The MBI-C operationalizes MBI across five domains: decreased motivation, emotional dysregulation, impulse dyscontrol, social inappropriateness, and abnormal perception or thought content.
The checklist was developed to address a gap in dementia risk assessment. Existing tools focus primarily on cognitive decline. The MBI-C captures behavioral and neuropsychiatric changes that may appear before cognitive symptoms emerge.
The MBI-C have been used extensively in clinics, population cohorts, and clinical trials. It is available in 20+ languages - contact IPM@innovatecalgary.com to learn more.
The MBI-C was developed through the University of Calgary. Licensing and distribution are managed in partnership with Innovate Calgary.
